Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Pistol Safety Training Course (MCL 28.425j Compliant)
- Statutory Basis
This pistol safety training course is conducted in accordance with MCL 28.425j, which requires completion of a certified training course prior to application for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL).
- Instructor Certification
This course is taught by a certified pistol safety training instructor as defined under MCL 28.425j(1).
Instructor certification documentation is available for inspection upon request.
- Course Content (MCL 28.425j Requirements)
The course includes all instruction required by MCL 28.425j, including but not limited to:
Safe storage, use, and handling of pistols
Ammunition knowledge and safe use
Pistol shooting fundamentals
Firearms and self-defense laws of the State of Michigan
Legal use of force and civil/criminal liability
Avoiding criminal attack and controlling violent confrontations
Proper interaction with law enforcement
- Live-Fire Requirement
Participants must successfully complete a minimum of 3 hours of instruction, including at least 1 hour of range time and live-fire shooting, as required by MCL 28.425j(1).
Participants must fire a minimum of 30 rounds during live-fire training.
Safe firearm handling must be demonstrated at all times.
- Attendance and Completion
Full attendance is mandatory. Partial attendance does not satisfy MCL 28.425j requirements.
Participants must:
Attend the full classroom and range portions
Safely handle a pistol
Meet minimum proficiency standards established by the instructor
Failure to meet these requirements will result in no certificate being issued.
- Eligibility Acknowledgment
By enrolling, the participant affirms that:
They are not prohibited under Michigan or federal law from possessing a firearm
They understand that completion of this course does not guarantee issuance of a CPL
Final CPL approval is determined solely by the county concealed weapon licensing board
- Certificate of Completion
Upon successful completion, the participant will be issued a certificate of completion consistent with MCL 28.425j(1).
The certificate confirms that statutory training requirements have been met.
Duplicate or replacement certificates may be subject to an administrative fee.
- Safety Rules and Conduct
Firearms must remain unloaded in the classroom unless directed by the instructor.
Ammunition is prohibited in the classroom.
Eye and ear protection are required during range firing.
The instructor may immediately remove any participant who acts unsafely or disruptively.
Removal for safety violations results in forfeiture of course fees.
- Assumption of Risk
The participant acknowledges that pistol training involves inherent risks, including serious bodily injury or death.
Participation is voluntary, and the participant knowingly assumes all risks associated with firearms training and live-fire exercises.
- Release and Waiver of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by Michigan law, the participant agrees to release and hold harmless:
The certified instructor
The training organization
The shooting range and property owners from any claims arising from participation, except in cases of gross negligence or willful misconduct.

Participants are responsible for remaining informed of changes to Michigan and federal law.
- Payment, Refunds, and Rescheduling
Payment is required prior to course participation.
No refunds for:
Failure to attend
Failure to complete the course
Removal due to unsafe behavior
Rescheduling is at the sole discretion of the instructor.
- Governing Law
These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, including MCL 28.425j.
- Acknowledgment
By enrolling in or attending this pistol safety training course, the participant acknowledges that they have read, understand, and agree to these Terms and Conditions and affirm compliance with MCL 28.425j requirements.
